Users will soon have a new feature that permits them to cut down on the quantity of artificial intelligence-produced content appearing in their streams. This move comes as the company announced that it presently contains over 1 thousand million AI-generated clips.
Trial and Implementation
This change is being tested over the coming weeks before a full-scale launch. This shift aligns with a rise in AI-generated material, spurred by recent video-generation tools.
The Broader AI Trend
Recent reports that approximately one in 10 of the fastest-growing content creators on a competing service primarily display content made by AI. A considerable share of this output is classified as low-quality AI content, a term for substandard, bulk-generated content that is often nonsensical or bizarre.
Our research shows that a lot of users enjoy content produced via AI tools, from AI artwork to educational videos, and we aim to offer the community the option to increase or decrease of that, according to their own choices,” commented a company executive.
Volume and Proportions
The platform shared that there are currently 1.3bn videos on its service identified as AI-generated. In total, over 100 mn media items are added to the app every day, making AI content a minor portion of its total content library.
Customizing Your Feed
Members will be able to decrease or raise the level of AI-generated videos they see by accessing the topic control setting in the app and picking “AI-generated content”. Further subjects that can already be controlled under the setting include politics, clothing, beauty, and movement.
Content Labeling and Policies
TikTok’s guidelines oblige content makers to identify convincing AI-generated content, and it prohibits harmful AI impersonations of public figures or critical incidents. Any authentic-looking AI video that is unmarked can be removed under its user guidelines.
Additionally, the service will henceforth attach an AI-generated label to content created with its proprietary AI systems, or flagged by an industry-wide initiative for identifying AI-generated material. This step is aimed to deter users from attempting to circumvent the tagging system.
AI Literacy Programs
TikTok is also establishing a $2 million AI literacy fund for specialists and organizations to produce educational content about using AI responsibly. This project will assist charitable organizations specializing in educating computer science.
Content Safety Approach
TikTok has supported its moderation strategy, following debate over intentions to cut jobs for a large number of content moderators in the UK. The company is planning to reduce hundreds of positions in its user protection department in the UK capital, with worker representatives and online safety experts expressing worry that people are being substituted by automated systems.
A senior executive clarified that human moderation would still have a role, but AI can shield workers by filtering out the most harmful content prior to it is viewed by staff. The company reported a notable drop in explicit and harmful content handled by content reviewers over the previous year due to the use of its automated systems.
“We think that it’s essential to integrate staff and AI to maintain a secure environment,” the executive stated. “We’ll have people as part of that process, but we further consider it’s extremely critical to limit contact with harmful content as swiftly, which is the area in which a significant AI assistance is really helping us work at speed.”
